THE WOOD SELECTION

Sourced exclusively from renewable stocks in the Appalachian Mountains and the Black Forest.

With sustainability as a core philosophy of WATERROWER | NOHRD, all of our wood is sourced exclusively from renewable stocks from the lush forests of the Appalachians Mountains in North America and Germany. Only young, straight-grained, kiln-dried heartwood is selected, after which a light layer of protective wax oil is applied to protect the timber surface from dirt and stains without heavy chemical treatment. This method also prevents cracking and drying damage, allowing the material's natural integrity to be preserved.

Because wood is a living material, each piece will vary in colour and grain, making every product truly one-of-a-kind. As the wood ages, it will develop a deeper, richer patina, unveiling its evolving beauty, history, and individual character. This natural darkening is not a flaw but a marker of passing time; a testament to the longevity and lived life of wood that we do our best to honour as a natural material and gift from the Earth.

OAK

Robust, ring-porous oak wood from North America or Europe is a firm favourite amongst manufacturers for its high strength properties. Its colour is typically red-brown, exhibiting coloured, textured medullary rays. Oak is among the most durable hardwoods for furniture making and is selected for its subtle, uniform grain.

Due to its consistent structure and grain, which often runs in a tone-on-tone pattern, oak wood is known for its understated elegance in both pattern and hue.

VINTAGE

For a vintage look, oak wood from North America is selected. The colour is stained brownish and features textured wood rays. Oak is one of the most durable hardwoods for furniture making and is a favourite amongst connoisseurs for its subtle, uniform grain.

CLUB

Our selection of equipment in 'club' is made from beech wood. Beech is a simple, light wood with a hard and dense surface, which, due to its structure and surface texture, is ideally suited for staining. We achieve our signature 'club' colour through a mixture of rose and black dye.

This look is popular in studios and light-coloured interiors. The stain primarily brings out the surface of the wood more intensely without obscuring the grain.

WALNUT

Walnut is a decorative, high-quality wood with a dark brown color and a dark, vibrant grain. After processing, the surfaces appear smooth and glossy. Walnut is easy to work and possesses high strength. It is durable and structurally very stable.

Walnut is a precious wood, making it a coveted choice amongst high-end interior design.

SHADOW

We use beech wood for our shadow finish. Beech is a simple, light-colored wood with a hard and dense surface, making it ideally suited for staining due to its structure and surface texture. For the shadow finish, the wood is stained black.

The stain primarily brings out the surface of the wood more intensely without obscuring the grain.

CHERRY

The cherry wood used has a uniform, fine-pored structure and possesses an elegant and decorative character. Its colour ranges from light yellow to reddish-brown; expect a natural patina and darkening to develop over time. Cherry wood has smooth surfaces and edges and is easy to work with.

Cherry is a sophisticated choice that brings with it a natural warmth to any interior design environment, with its characteristic reddish-brown hue that will soften against darker colours in its foreground.
